  • What is Naloxone?
  • Naloxone is a medication used to treat someone who has overdosed on opioids. It helps temporarily reverse the effects of the overdose until medical help arrives. During an overdose, breathing slows and in some cases stops. If used right away, Naloxone can help the person breathe again.

  • Who should get a Naloxone Kit?
  • An opioid overdose can happen to anyone taking an opioid. If you, a family member or friend are taking an opioid, including prescription opioids, get a Naloxone Kit. This is particularly important if there are children in the household.

  • Naloxone Kits include Naloxone and the supplies and information you, a family member or friend, need to know in terms of how and when to use it.
    • An overdose can happen to anyone taking an opioid.
    • Have a Naloxone Kit on hand. Don’t forget to inform a family member, friend or other person who may be able to assist in the event of overdose.
  • Always call 911 immediately
  • If you are ever with someone who has overdosed always dial 911. Follow their instructions and administer Naloxone as outlined within the Naloxone Kit.

How to stay safe when taking opioid prescription medications:

  • Do not drink alcohol
  • Do not start any new medications without talking to your Pharmacist or a medical health professional first
  • Do not share medications
  • Store medications in a safe and secure place, away from the reach of children
  • Take your medications exactly as prescribed. If you have questions, ask your Pharmacist or a medical health professional
  • Return any unneeded opioids to the pharmacy – do not store them at home indefinitely

Opioids*

Opioids are drugs with pain relieving properties that are used primarily to treat pain. Opioids can also induce euphoria (feeling high), which gives them the potential to be used improperly.

Opioids can be prescribed medications:

  • codeine
  • fentanyl
  • morphine
  • oxycodone
  • hydromorphone
  • medical heroin
  • methadone
  • buprenorphine
