What is Digestive Health
Everyone can have digestive problems once in a while. The digestive tract runs from the mouth all the way to the anus and includes everything in between such as the stomach and intestines. Good digestive health means all these parts are functioning properly. However, the digestive system can be affected by disease, diet, and emotional stress. Maintaining good digestive health involves managing any digestive disorders, making healthy food choices, and coping with stress.
Common Digestive Disorders
Digestive problems often result in symptoms such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, abdominal pain, upset stomach, and stomach cramps. Digestive problems can range from mild symptoms such as these listed, to more severe, long-term digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS, a disorder of the intestine that causes symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain), Crohn’s disease (a type of inflammatory bowel disease that commonly affects the large intestine and the part of the small intestine known as the ileum), ulcerative colitis (another type of inflammatory disease that causes sores in the lining of the rectum and large intestine), peptic ulcer disease (sores in the lining of the intestine or stomach), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD, which occurs when stomach acid and stomach content reflux, or flow back, into the esophagus).
