SPRING CLEAN YOUR SKIN
Just as you’re doing your seasonal closet flip (goodbye, nubby sweaters!), as the temperatures climb, it’s also time to think about switching up your skincare. Post-polar vortex, your skin may have taken a beating (think: dull, dry and generally lacklustre) and those heavy moisturizers just won’t cut it anymore. Here, dermatologist Mark Lupin weighs in on how to perk up your complexion and reboot your skin regimen. Be Gentle Parched, irritated skin may need some extra TLC to cope with the season’s change in weather. Choose a moisturizing, non-irritating cleanser containing ceramides which clean while restoring the skin’s essential moisture barrier. Lighten Up Now that the air is less dry both inside and out, that rich face salve that saved your skin in winter may feel too heavy in the spring. That said, regardless of your skin type, you still need to moisturize. “As we head into the warmer season, lighter moisturizers are usually preferable,” says Lupin. Try a lotion or gel-based moisturizer which hydrate just as well as heavier creams, but feel light. Smooth Moves Banish dull skin and get your glow back by incorporating a lotion or cleanser with alpha hydroxy acid, a chemical exfoliator that removes dead skin. If your skin is sensitive, use a non-chemical exfoliator such as a gentle scrub or skin polish. Preserve & Protect While you should be wearing an SPF 30 lotion year-round, says Lupin, fair skin types who tend to burn should opt for a higher level. What’s more, many of us aren’t nearly as generous enough with our sunscreen application as we should be. “It has been shown that the average person only gets a third of the SPF protection that’s written on the bottle,” says Lupin. “The SPF number requires a certain amount of sunscreen to be applied, and most people apply too little.” To avoid this scenario, choose a sunscreen with an SPF 50 or higher.
