Having a solid support system is your key to living well with AS. Not sure where to start? Here are a few tips:
Start with your family and friends. Your support system starts with family and friends. The people who know and love you can be there to get you through the rough parts. They can also help make your life easier by assisting you with everyday tasks such as running errands.
Talk to your healthcare providers. Your doctor, nurse, pharmacist, and physiotherapist are all valuable sources of advice and support. If you aren't sure whether your treatment is working or whether you're using it properly, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. If you have questions about AS and where to get support, speak to your doctor or nurse. And if you need help with stretching or other exercises, speak to your physiotherapist.
Reach out for support. Talking to others with AS can help you deal with your condition. Hearing their stories can help you feel less alone. They may also be able to share their tips on coping with AS. You can use these resources to learn more about AS and to find a support group near you:
- The Arthritis Society of Canada: www.arthritis.ca
- Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation: whenithurtstomove.org
By calling on friends and family, talking to your healthcare professionals, and finding AS support groups, you can build a solid support network to help you live well with AS.
