When an 18-year ballet career came to an abrupt halt due to an injury, it wasn’t long before Janine unexpectedly found her second calling at Shoppers Drug Mart. What started off as a year on the mend eventually turned into post-secondary studies in fashion merchandising and marketing, and a part-time job as a cosmetician. “It was then that I found makeup, because I didn’t have dance anymore,” she says. “I had to figure something out and that’s where I landed.” After receiving her diploma, she set her sites on a management position at Shoppers Drug Mart.
Just three short months later, Janine’s goal became a reality. Now, with 11 years at Shoppers under her belt, she lights up when talking about her team and the events they organize at the store. A schedule of several mini-events each week, more than 12 galas a year and numerous master-class seminars means she almost always has her hands full —just the way she likes it. “We really try to make the galas special for the customer, so we’ll have all the vendors come to the store, as well as music and food.”
Luckily, she has help in the form of 10 beauty experts who work under her. While Janine comes up with the game plan for the year, she credits her team with helping to brainstorm. It’s the events, she believes, that ultimately lead to strong customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Events aren’t the only projects frequently Janine tends to. She is currently in the middle of piloting a new clientele system that involves a lot of hands-on and one-on-one training, and coaching with her teammates, whom she refers to as “my girls.” “Our entire team is just really empowered,” she enthuses. “The passion that is held within the store trends right to the customers. When a customer leaves the store feeling great about themselves, we’ve done our job right.”
While Janine also prides herself on her regular duties as a beautyBOUTIQUE manager, she also finds time to go above and beyond the call the duty by training new managers. “Our office is always looking for new talent, and I really do feel that they’re set up for success,” she says. Her words of wisdom for those starting out? Never set limitations for yourself or others. “I never, ever say we can’t do something as a team. I never tell myself I can’t do something.”
If Janine’s career is any indication, her advice pays off. Switching gears from a life in ballet, during which time she lived in New York, California, Toronto and Winnipeg, her passion for her work with Shoppers Drug Mart has never waned. And with two young boys at home, aged seven and four, Janine admits her life is busy. But if you ask her, she wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I just try to learn from everybody around me. I can never learn enough, and I just try to pick up something special from everyone.”
